What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is a state-of-the-art technique for the comprehensive control of pain and anxiety in oral surgery.  There are other methods used in dentistry such as oral (pill) sedation but IV Sedation’s superior results make it the method of choice for the highly fearful patients or those patients who would prefer not to be aware of what was going on before, during, or after the procedure, and would prefer to have very little memory of the procedure. Because of the types of medications used and their instant delivery, IV Sedation allows our surgeons to control their effects precisely. IV Sedation is extremely safe when administered by qualified providers.

To perform this advanced sedative technique special training and clinical experience is required.  Dr. Kang  completed four years of extensive training in a hospital-based surgical residency program alongside medical residents in general surgery, anesthesia and other specialties.  Approval to perform IV Sedation requires the office to be specially equipped with emergency equipment and medications. This includes an ECG monitor to observe your heart rate, rhythm and breathing.

Facility Accreditation

We are dedicated to providing the highest quality of surgical/anesthesia services to our patients.  Our facility is a registered non-hospital facility providing general anesthesia services and is approved by the college of dental surgeons of BC.

Preoperative Instructions

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery. If surgery is to be performed in the afternoon then the patient should have nothing to eat or drink for at least  eight hours prior to the surgery.

• Any medications that are normally taken should be taken with a sip of water, unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.
• A responsible adult MUST accompany the patient. This person must be able to drive since the patient will be unable to drive for at least 24 hours after I.V. sedation.
• Loose clothing should be worn to facilitate the starting of an intravenous line to administer the sedation or anesthetic and also to facilitate the placement of monitoring equipment. Flat comfortable shoes should be worn.
• Contacts should not be worn on the day of the surgery. No make-up, jewelry, or nail polish should be worn on the day of the planned surgical procedure.
• Anesthetic cannot be administered if you have a severe cold, sore throat, or sinus infection with excessive drainage. If you develop any of these problems prior to your appointment, please call the office so that we may reschedule your surgery.
• While taking antibiotics, Birth Control Pills may become ineffective. Extra precautions should be taken while you are on antibiotics.
• Be sure to maintain adequate hydration in the days prior to your appointment

How will I Feel during and after IV Sedation?

You will feel comfortable at all times. You will be in a deep and relaxed state but will be responsive to verbal commands. Patients often comment that they were asleep throughout the procedure. You will be given a local anesthetic for the surgery in your mouth after the sedative is administered.

Following the treatment, it is unlikely you will remember the actual surgery. You will be groggy and unsteady and therefore MUST have a responsible ADULT to escort you home. Patients should not drive a vehicle, operate dangerous equipment or make any important decisions for at least 24 hours after receiving I.V. Sedation.
